Australia Day Special, by Greg Tingle - 26th January 2011

G'day and Happy Australia Day everyone. Ok, we know some of you punters, journos, high rollers - casino whales, entertainment news junkies, politicians, insiders, outsiders and legal eagles are from across the globe, and are not Australia, nor have ever been down under, but you get the idea. Did you know that some indigenous Australia's call Australia Day 'Invasion Day'! That's because most history books show that Captain James Cook and his crew invaded Australia on this day in 1988. They are known by a new names including the First Fleet, while some aboriginals will always think of them and murderous mongrels, who stole their land and pride. It's easy for many of us to get the point of the blackfellas (affectionate). Media Man and Gambling911 with a bush tucker bag full of Australian gambling, casino, poker, media and sports news. Fair winds...

Queensland Banana Bender State: Pub Pokies And Online Pokies Becoming More Popular?...

One armed bandits are maintaining their popularity in 'The Sunshine State'. It's understand that punters might have only a 1 in a million chance of winning really big, lotto - millionaire style, but they just keep coming back for more. Yep, throw another dime in the pokie baby. Queenslanders "invested" close to $2 billion last year as the punters passion for the slots maintained its fever pace. The total pokies expenditure of $1.81 billion was slightly down on the previous year, it was the third year consecutively the number exceeded $1.8 billion. We're also learned that the 2008 figure of $1.83 billion was an all-time record. Now, this is important - those numbers Do Not take into account the rabid take up and roll our of online poker or sports betting. You know, betting over the global medium - the internet. Overall, Queenslanders spent $7 million less on pokies than last year and $28 million less than in 2008, but it still works out at in excess of $150 million every month down the slots August was the year's biggest month for slot gamblers, who put close to $170 million in the throats of the one armed bandits. August was also the biggest month for gamblers in 2008, with more than $173 million lost. Pokies remain by far the most popular games for punters in Australia, bringing in most of the estimated $17 billion spent on all forms of gambling down under each year. Some insiders think that the reduction in official spending was more a sign of the increased popularity of internet and sports-based gambling. Concentrating on pokie figures, it appears Queenslanders gambled more at the height of the global financial crisis two years ago than they did throughout 2010.

Tassie 'Devil' Gambling Tycoon Devilish Quotes...

David Walsh from Tasmania was such a big hit with the readership we thought we would dig up a few more of the red hot 'The Devil's' quotes, that are too good not to share. First a refresher...Art and gambling do mix, at least that's the experience of Brits Damian Aspinall, Phil 'Tuffers' Tufnell, Australian artist Gina Sinozich, Media Man (bodypaint and burlesque "fetish") and Tasmanian gambling whale - tycoon, David 'Wicked' (satire) Walsh. You will pick up on Dave's affectionate nickname by us later. We like you David, ok mate. Tasmania's most famous or infamous gambling figure, millionaire, David Walsh yesterday gave us a peak into his art exhibit...the biggest (and weirdest) private art gallery in Tasmania, if not the Asia Pacific. The $110 million Museum of Old and New Art is nestled on the banks of Hobart's Derwent River.

Quotes By The Tasmanian Devil!...

"FUCK the art, let's rock'n'roll."

"I think formal curation is a form of mental masturbation."

"I'm not really that interested in a bunch of big names. Most of the works are by people most people haven't heard of and still won't have heard of because there's no wall labels."

"I don't want to lose control (or) something that ends up looking like a pale version of the National Gallery of Victoria".

"Subversive adult Disneyland".

"Please see reception if you are planning a pool party or a ritualistic orgy."

"It's the opportunity to mess with your head. I like the idea of people having a couple of beers and looking at the art, having a couple more and changing their mind."

"Just a privileged guy with a megaphone"

"It’s like a rich man’s soap box. I’m standing on my soapbox and I’m shouting my views like they mean something."

"I’ll take all the popular stuff out. And if you go to the toilet two or three times we’ll recommend a good urologist."

“My brother once said about me that I’d rather be outside a barrel pissing in than inside the barrel pissing out. I’m anti this idea that we know what we’re doing with certainty. I kinda think that most things that are good happen to people largely by accident, but then they start looking for explanations. You see the views of rich, successful people on television, and they tell you why they got rich and successful; they don’t interview all the people who went through the same process and didn’t. I think most things are complete crap. I want to show that you can be fortunate without believing that your fortune was anything other than fortune."

"There are so many things we do that we hide from. We hack open cows and eat their guts but we compartmentalise that away from our lives so we can pretend it’s not happening. And on a larger, more important scale, if each of us acted individually to say ‘OK, we f…ed up the atmosphere, it is our personal responsibility’, humanity would behave in a very different way."

"One of the things about having money is that … I feel a bit of guilt and a level of privilege, and it seems to be an obligation to do something, and since art is what I’ve been doing....but it wasn’t really like that. It was: I bought this small gallery, bought a bigger one, and gradually it became something of this scale. It’s become a lot more serious endeavour than I intended it to be. There’s a bit of thumbing my nose at the establishment and trying to bypass academia, but mainly I just wanted it to be a bit of fun. And it is. And it will be."

"The gambling is all a computer thing that is going on right now".

The spinner got there at 8pm hoping to get star VIP treatment for 14 of his closest mates. In the mix was was Joe Hachem, who he had earlier caught up with at the launch of the Aussie Millions Poker Tournament at Crown Casino. Warne requested an escort (no, not that type silly) when he arrived and posed mostly for photographs with his sunglasses on. He also spent time in Andy Roddick's player's box during his loss to Swissman Stanislas Wawrinka. It been a big couple of days of "poker her" for the legend, playing rendezvous with Liz Hurley in LA. Australian Financial Review Goes Gaga For Lady Gaga; Gets Facts Wrong (We Think)...

It took us a few months of going through newspapers but we finally found the AFR to make a slip up, and its a doozy....An article reads "the complex will have a few upmarket bars, including one on the roof, and an events theatre to house live acts – think Lady Gaga – as well as awards nights." With Gaga's level of popularity she would require a much larger venue than Star City. Earlier this year, she - they played two concerts at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, capacity 12,000 or thereabouts. Do the math.

Brisbane: Flood Relief Money Gets Spend On Pokies, Vice - Piss Up At Pubs...

It's been reported in a number of Queensland newspapers that the $1000 flood relief grants that went to many good folks in Granville are being used to feed slots and buy piss (beer) rather than food and necessities. Two Maryborough publicans say that in some instances the answer to that is yes, and they are disgusted. One of the publicans was so incensed by the misuse of flood relief money she telephoned Fairfax Media to complain. "A man came in bragging about how he’d got the $1000 payout because he told Centrelink he was stuck in Granville – but he was here the whole time. It makes me sick that people are openly admitting they’ve got the money for nothing, while there are people who’ve died or lost everything." She said Centrelink should have screened the applications more carefully to make sure only people who were genuinely in need received the cash. Another pub owner said his one armed bandits had not stopped buzzing since the grants became available. "We were quiet during the actual floods but this week’s been totally different. The pokies and the bottle shop have been going non-stop." Yeah, Aussie continue to love a punt, rain, hail, shine or flood!

Australian Pokies Saviour Or Villain; Lovers VS Haters, by Greg Tingle - 11th January 2011

G'day punters, journos, high rollers, politicians, insiders, outsiders... one and all. Today we're covering a Queensland banana bender who some clubs hate with passion, and some politicians have really letting him feel the love lately. Yep, its the lovers VS the haters, as the Aussie pubs and clubs VS government gambling war continues. Media Man and Gambling911 with another explosive news report from the front line of the war zone. Incoming...

The bloodhounds have been hard and work, and have.. er, smelt blood. We've followed the blood stained trail up the Australian east coast and have landed in Sandgate. Any otherwise pretty quite place until we reved it up a bit Casino Jack.

Front and Centre Daryl Wilson. Some media and gaming commentators reckon you're now in the firing line - in the red zone (ie: out of the "green zone"). You wanted some attention and coverage, so here it is old son. You can already just hear PM Julia Gillard rub her hands with glee, and Mr X start to break out in a smile, having formally endured the wrath of an angry mobile of pub and pokie loving club types who don't wish to be told what to think or play!

P.M Gillard is set to be advised to model proposed gambling law revamps on how Daryl Wilson ('ALP Poster Boy Of The Month Winner' - satire) runs the Sandgate RSL Memorial Club in sunny Queensland. This smart pants has allowed punters to "pre-determine" how much they can lose on poker machines.

This is of course music to the ears of Independents Nick Xenophon and Andrew Wilkie. The supporters of the plan reckon his system "demolishes" claims "mandatory" systems on pokies cannot work. Read on, and you be the judge (but try not to have nightmares about being fingerprinted or having your pension card frozen, not to mention CentreLink payments unsettled for long durations).

Enter lobby group Clubs Australia, which is asserting pressure and a loud voice to federal MPs to reduce and dumb down reform. They are arguing that self-imposed mandatory spending limits would send clubs and pubs aka "pokie palaces" broke and that technology was not widely available or just too expensive.

PM Gillard pledged mandatory gaming schemes to Mr X to secure his vote! Is that type of bribe? She pencilled in 2012 coming on 2004 to be fully operational. Punters would be "banned" (there's that word again) playing pokies anywhere down under in Australia for at least 24 hours once they reached their limit.

The Sandgate model and way of doing things will be up for discussion at P.M Gillard's select parliamentary committee.

Wilson shared he had received anonymous threats to "back off" gaming reform. Yeah, there's a bit of "Real Life Underbelly" at play here, so it does appear.

"There are times that I don't like what the industry's doing...basically the rich were raping the poor. "The greedy are trying to get a system past the politicians."

The Sandgate RSL GM basically encourages his members to set their loss limit. Once reached, their gaming card defaults and the machine sets off an alert buzzer. The other players look around to see who has been naughty or nice, an Bob's your uncle, the goose is cooked, and your off the machines, and its time to take a leak, have a drink, and see the family and friends, having to look forward to next time to feed the slots.

Punters who desire to continue gambling have to make a conscious decision to keep going. Wilson said most people did not. Mind you, his club offers great drinks, value for money, and a top menu known for fantastic seafood and steaks.

Senator Xenophon said Clubs Australia needed to come clean aka be honest. That's his point of view, not necessarily ours ok readers.

"As the Sandgate example shows, it can be done with pre-existing technology right now for $1.50 a day per machine, which is a pittance when you consider these machines take in losses of hundreds of dollars a day. When at least 40% of poker machine losses come from problem gamblers, club and pub bosses can't be allowed to stay in denial."

Some insiders say "Mr X" is making up numbers on the run. It's well know that many a pollie has fudged numbers when they are trying to get proposals into law. Remember the Iraq war and Vietnam. Say no more hey.

A Clubs Australia spokesman said Senator Xenophon had based the cost on a voluntary scheme and mandatory enforcement would cost $2 billion.

"The future of the club industry is on the line here, certainly in New South Wales, to a lesser extent in Queensland," he said.

The national gambling revenue in 2008-09 was some $19 billion plus with more than half from one armed bandits and roughly 600,000 Aussies play the pokies at least weekly. Don't ask us how many play online also, but be assured its lots.

This website looks at the many issues central to problem gambling and provides clear and concise information on:

problems associated with gambling
the cycle of gambling
why Aboriginal people develop problems with gambling
the impact of gambling on individuals, family and friends
access to help
strategies for individuals who may have a gambling problem

A number of resources and publications are made available on the website for individuals to access. In addition, information is provided for conference or events taking place throughout Australia which tackle the issue of problem gambling.

Media Man and Gambling911 also publicly congratulate James Packer and Andrew "Twiggy" Forrest for creating over a thousands jobs recently for qualified indigenous Australians. Packer helped facilitate jobs in the gambling and tourism sector, while Forrest got Aussies back to work in the mining sector. You really have to give the devils their due don't you. Read up past issues re GenerationOne for more background information as to their good works.

Australian National Lottery To Replace Pokies; Um, Don't Think So Casino Jack...

The term known as "problem gambling" might be reduced by replacing poker machine taxes with a national lottery, supporters reckon.

Mr X has thrown the idea around for a few years now and says Senator Nick Xenophon... the measure would replace revenue from other harmful forms of gambling as well as poker machines. Senator Xenophon said he didn't support any form of gambling "but I'm also a pragmatist. If the choice is between poker machines, where up to 50 per cent of losses come from problem gamblers, or lotteries where it is significantly less ... then that is the way forward," he said.

The idea was put forward as part of a proposed national revamp of gambling regulation.

Researchers Linda Hancock and Michele O'Neil said firmly federal control was needed to fight the states' addiction to pokies revenue and to help problem gamblers.

When former Aussie PM Kevin Rudd was in charge (before he was cut loose by the ALP and the political machine, to be replaced with a new "machine" Julia Gillard), K Rudd went on record with "I hate poker machines and I know something of their impact on families". That was way back in 2007. Doesn't time fly when you're having fun!

The states draw more than 10% of their revenue from gambling.

Senator Xenophon, who entered to Parliament on an anti-gambling platform (like we couldn't guess) stated they had too much at stake to take on the pokies industry.

"State governments are the No. 1 jackpot junkies. They can't be trusted when it comes to gambling regulation," he said.

Political and gaming analysts have been wondering whether "Mr X" can be trusted.

Readers are encouraged to know their limits when playing the slots. If you don't trust yourself, bring a friend, and if your not sure, don't bet much, or don't play for money, and just check out free games online. Most of all, have fun.

Australian Land Based Casinos: Best In World?, by Greg Tingle - 2nd January 2011

Happy New Year everyone. Starting the new year off right we thought we would revisit the Australian land based casino scene. Last year the Aussie casinos were a huge source of news and gossip for us, and who can forget the world famous Australian casino wars (still raging), with James Packer's Crown Casino VS Tabcorp's Star City still being the main event. Revamps worth close to a million dollars are still a major point as the battle for high roller super whales, dolphins and the entertainment and tourism dollar continues and now security, "biometrics" and government deals are stealing some of the spotlight. Media Man and Gambling911 take you on a journey to the Australian land based casinos, 'Casino Jack' style...

Australia is still home to some of the world's great casinos, hotels and resorts (and pokie palaces).

While the land down under has over a dozen land based casinos, there's only three that both rate highly and grab the majority of headlines on a global stage. Enter James Packer's Crown Casino in Melbourne, Tabcorp's Star City in Sydney, and Jupiters Hotel & Casino on the Gold Coast.

Mind you, Casino Canberra, Cairns' Reef Hotel and Casino and Perth's Burswood Entertainment Complex have been making a lot of noise recently, but its really a battle between the 'big two'.

Media Man and Gambling911 have readjusted our eye in the sky and further looked at the landscape of the Aussie land based casino sector, and let us tell you maties... its a you beaut and fair dinkim!

Readers will be aware that there's quite a "casino war" in the land of kangaroos, koalas and goannas. You would have to be Blind Freddy not to know about the ultra competitive showdown (and hunt for whales and dolphins) between Packer's Crown Casino down south and Tabcorp's Star City in 'Sin City' Sydney.

Crown Casino and Star City are following the global trend, largely driven forward from Las Vegas, Macau and the Philippines, of offering a total entertainment experience... not just gambling... you know, slots, poker, table games and the like. Whales aka high-rollers, have also demanded the changing face of the sector. Don't get us wrong, the gambling aspect remains vital to the business model and to the punters, but for a variety of reasons Australian casino kings have employed a more holistic model. The reasons include being more government friendly, legal eagle elements and complimenting the larger casino, entertainment and lifestyle sector. Crowns' James Packer won last year's Media Man 'Australian Casino Entrepreneur Of The Year' award, and his casino won the Australian land based casino award. Gossip And News: Opening Aussie batsman Phil Hughes has been slammed for attending a function hours before play on Boxing Day. Hughes, who opened the batting at the MCG and was dismissed for just 16, attended the Shane Warne Foundation breakfast at Crown casino along with vice-captain Michael Clarke. "It's one of the most disgraceful things I've ever heard," said fiery former Australian Test star Rodney Hogg. "You've got the opportunity to come back in, you're going to be in front of 80,000 people. "You should get out of bed, have your breakfast and do your normal preparation. "You don't run off to those sorts of mornings. Even though he's young, the fact is it probably makes him a little more apprehensive and a bit more nervous (about the Test match) after going and doing that sort of thing. "It's not a normal morning's preparation for him." Clarke, who is close mates with Warne, was joined by sporting stars Billy Brownless, Aaron Hamill, Mark Taylor and Ian Healy at the breakfast. The two Australian players were interviewed briefly by Warne around 7.30am before they returned to their nearby Quay West hotel.

Some of the ramped up services and offerings as part of the industry development include but are not limited to:

Entertainment complex upgrades (including securing more world class acts, more often, to attract the crowds and keep all clients and business partners happy)
Hotel suite refurbishments
Private gambling room upgrades for high rolling VIP's
Sports bar upgrades
Enhanced security - technology and more staff
Gulf Stream Jets aka Lear Jets for international high rollers in a hurry and who demand and casino afford the best

Aussie Casino News Bytes

Crown Casino: Hosted a number of players from the Australian Cricket Team recently, just as The Ashes were on the way. Packer's midis touch didn't help Clarke's and Ponting's luck on the field unfortunately. Crown Casino will host the world famous 'Aussie Millions' Poker Championship this January, and already a number of online poker rooms are holding satellite qualifiers and the like. Media Man insiders reckon that many folks want another guest or journo of Crown hosted TV Logies awards to be fired for misconduct again this year, for Twitting journos and comedians out there, be careful you hear us now. Crown Casino is continuing to upgrade their website which is a very smart move in the currently environment. Management in regular contact with sister casinos, City of Dreams Macau and Altira Macau. 100s more staff to be employed, some of which under the GenerationOne employment initiative, dedicated to helping get Indigenous Australians back into the workforce. Up to $500,000 being spent on major upgrades in the next few years.

Crown Casino Entertainment:

I Can’t Believe it’s not COUNTDOWN, It’s a Musical Comedy

Don’t miss a night of reminiscing, laughter, music, big hair and shameless parodies.

Star City: Has expanded their budget by another $100,000 or so. Total budget for upgrade is now very close to $1 million dollars! Is ordering a few more Lear Jets to help better compete with Crown Casino. Upgraded website. Did get Oprah Winfrey, Bob Geldof and Bon Jovi late last year, so they are doing something right, or maybe just have friends in high places. World class sports bar and entertainment amenities. They are right on side with the NSW Labor government, so give the devils their due. Star City was awards last year's runner Media Man 'Australian Land Based Casino' award. Gossip And News: A beer loving poker player used his "poker face" to fool Star City Casino staff into serving him 42 beers in a single 17-hour sitting. The unnamed gambler put in a marathon innings, downing five beers every two hours. Three waiters were happy to oblige the cashed-up player with as many drinks as he requested and failed to keep track of the seriously high level of alcohol the man was ingesting as he sat at the same card table in the main gaming floor from 2.30am. It was not until the card table closed at 7am that Star City staff realised the man was wildly intoxicated. "He didn't appear to be steady on his feet. He was dozing off at the table and the manager had to help him collect his chips so he could cash them in," bar waiter Helen Mikhael-Ghanime, who was sacked for her role in serving the man 15 beers in seven hours, said. The casino will be careful to to make the same mistake again. Generally not good for PR and this sort of thing attracts heavy fines. The casino authority said the $10,000 fine had been reduced because of Star City's otherwise good record in dealing with drunken gamblers. It evicted 6717 intoxicated patrons in 2008. "[The authority] considers this matter to be a serious breach of Star City's responsible service of alcohol obligations," the authority said to Star City. "In determining the pecuniary penalty, due consideration was given to Star City's record in relation to the responsible service of alcohol and the action taken to prevent similar incidents in the future."

Entertainment At Star City:

DOCTOR ZHIVAGO
Don't miss this explosive new musical romance at the Lyric Theatre from 11 February 2011.

MUSIC OF ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER
A new theatrical event featuring Andrew Lloyd Webber's most timeless songs performed by the current stars of Australian musical theatre.

Jupiters Gold Coast: Upgraded their poker room to the tune of a few hundred thousand dollars. Is trying to live down the story that they are Australia's 'most dangerous casino', and is beefing up security. Jupiters is nearby to the beaches where major surfing competitions take place annually. Dreamworld (Hollywood On The Gold Coast) is only a short drive away from the casino. Upgraded website. Recent management shake up, all the way up to director level. Should be strong year for them.

Burswood Entertainment Complex: Upgraded security. Burswood is known to put on fantastic community fundraisers. American pro wrestling legend Hulk Hogan drew a massive crowd at Burswood late last year for his charity work with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Virgin's Richard Branson has also done some impressive fundraising on site. Branson's Virgin Games (not available in Australia) remains keen to expand the gaming globally, and perhaps his face to face meetings with the media and political savvy Aussie Casino king, James Packer, won't go astray. Security has been beefed up yet again and more world class acts continue to get booked.

Casino Canberra: Galaxy Nightclub - Canberra's hottest nightclub opens from 9pm every Saturday with the beats of the 70's and the best of the 80's. Come and hear the soundtrack of our lives. Galaxy has a NO GLASS policy! Is currently pushing to get 200 pokies to help kick business along.

The Reef Hotel Casino: This is like paradise. One of Australia's most beautiful and scenic casinos. Claymore, a hot Celtic band brought in the new year for our friends.

Lasseters Hotel Casino: If your in that neck of the woods checking out Outback nature, you need to step in and play Cleo, and why not stay the night to see if you "get lucky". Then enjoy a breakfast of champions as your journey continues. Oh, a Slots Tournament every Tuesday night You've got to spin to win!
